PYSF | Fall Programs

There are 3 Entry Points to our program: Learn to Sail (8-11yo), Middle School Sailing (11-13yo) and High School Sailing (13-18yo).
Boats are provided for all introductory level classes (entry points) as well as Opti Green/Development. Boat ownership is needed for the Opti and C420 Race Teams after your first season.
All sailors must wear a US Coast Guard approved life-jacket, and helmet.
Safety boats are present for all sessions.
Cancellation Policy: $50 service charge for cancellation prior to first date of class. No refunds within 2 weeks of class start.
In the event of inclement weather that poses a safety risk, PYSF reserves the right to cancel or postpone classes.

Providing a first-class sailing program—with well-maintained boats, quality equipment, safe facilities, and an experienced, highly trained staff—requires a significant financial investment. We work hard to deliver the best possible experience for every sailor while keeping our programs as accessible as possible. That commitment is why we offer scholarships, actively pursue grants, and rely on fundraising to help keep tuition affordable for all youth sailors. If your family needs financial assistance, we encourage you to apply for a scholarship. We also ask that you consider how you might give back through volunteer service, helping strengthen the community that makes these opportunities possible. If you are able to pay tuition and contribute beyond it, we invite you to make a gift to our Annual Fund. Your generosity helps provide scholarships, maintain our fleet and facilities, support our exceptional instructors, and ensure that every young person has the chance to learn, grow, and thrive through sailing. To help provide transparency, we have included the actual cost per student, per class. We hope this illustrates the important role that donations to the Annual Fund play in making our programs possible and keeping them accessible to families throughout our community. PYSF Scholarships are available as part of PYSF’s mission to be a community sailing program that teaches sailing regardless of ability to pay.

Learn to Sail

Learn the fundamentals of sailing while developing the skills to progress through the proficiency levels of sailing. While no experience is necessary, sailors must be comfortable in the water while wearing a life jacket.

Boats are provided (Cube sailboat)
Ages 8-11
Dates: Sept 12-13,19-20,26-27, Oct 3-4
Times: 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.

*Some kids pick up the sport quickly, while others may repeat learn-to-sail multiple times before advancing to Learn 2.0. Your instructors will update you on the sailor’s progress towards the end of the course. This class does not compete in regattas.

Learn 2.0 (Intro to Race)

For sailors with less than a year sailing in Cubes/Optimists (or equivalent), who understand the basics of sailing. This class is great for the sailor who has completed Learn to Sail but needs a refresher on proper boat-handling and sailing upwind. This class is required to go to Learn 3.0 and then on to our Opti development or Middle School Sailing programs.

Opti Development Team

For sailors who have completed Learn 3.0 (or equivalent) and are looking to further their racing skills. The Development Team is comprised of both Green and Champ Fleet sailors. Sailors will be encouraged to compete in local and non local regattas, and will be advised by their coaches the appropriate steps.

PYSF Regattas

Middle School

(ENTRY POINT TO SPORT FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AGED KIDS 5th-8th grades

Learn the fundamentals of sailing while developing the skills to progress through the proficiency levels of sailing. Learn to sail a FEVA with a spinnaker, learn to sail a double-handed FJ, and 420 to get a head start on High School Sailing. While no experience is necessary, sailors must be comfortable in the water while wearing a life jacket. This class serves as an introduction to double-handed sailing and racing. This class is also appropriate as a next step for our opti development team in order to learn double-handed sailing.

The following gear is required to sail in the class:

Life Jacket – US Coast Guard Approved Type III
Helmet – a bike or rafting helmet will work
Closed-toed shoes – either old sneakers or sailing wetsuit boots
Wet suit

Boats are provided (RS Feva’s)

High School

8th-12th graders. No prior experience or existing team required! Regattas take place both locally in the Bay Area and in Southern California. Comfort in the water is a must.

For Students that are brand new to the sport we will have a smaller group practice inside our HS practice to help those sailors get up to Speed faster. Practice times, places, everything is the same just more instruction with a smaller coach to sailor ratio.

Try-It-Out Days will be held Sept 9-10. These are designed to allow new sailors to get a feel for the sport and see how practices are run. As well as allow the coaches to assess sailors’ levels for the season. It is mandatory to attend at least one of the try-it-out days.

C420 Development Team

Prerequisite: Middle School/ High School Sailing or Opti Development

Sailors who are competent in sailing as both a skipper and crew, or a sailor who is a competent Opti racer. This team will practice and develop boat handling, sail trim, as well as strategy on the race course. The team will learn how to tune the club 420 and the basics of rake and tension on the boat’s rig. No partner needed. Most sailors will be doing BOTH C420 Development Team and High School Race Team to further enhance their skill set.

High Performance Race Team (HP)

Prerequisites: Must have sailed on the 420 development team before being invited onto the HP Team.

HP Race Team members will be practicing in blocks of practice leading up to regattas. The team will train and race in both c420’s and in the high performance i420’s. Team members are expected to participate in local Bay Area regattas. Regattas outside of the Bay Area will be coordinated with team coaches. (Example: Midwinters in Florida). Most sailors will be doing BOTH High Performance Race Team and High School Race Team to further enhance their skill set.

PYSF Regattas

Drop In Wing Foil

Discover the thrill of wing foiling—one of the fastest-growing watersports in the world. This class introduces sailors and water-sports enthusiasts to the fundamentals of riding a hydrofoil board while controlling a handheld wing. Students will learn how to harness the wind for power, build balance and board control, and experience the incredible sensation of lifting above the water on a foil.

If you have already taken our wing foil class come and practice to make the next step in your learning, winging multiple days is necessary to become proficient.

Wetsuits are highly recommended.
Wetsuit boots or sneakers are required.

No prior experience required! Comfort in the water is a must. Sailors will be active in and out of the water while learning to ride a foil-board.

Mondays 4 p.m. to 7 p.m September 14 – October 12
Max Class Size: 4

Cost: $30 per Drop in Day – please sign up a minimum of 48hrs ahead of time.
Covers coaching and boat/foil usage.

Each date is a standalone drop-in session.

Refund Policy: No refunds. In the event of rain with no makeup session scheduled, a refund will be issued.

No scholarships are awarded for these drop-in sessions.

Learn to Waszp (LTWZ) Camp

Experience the thrill of foiling! This hands-on clinic introduces sailors to the WASZP, a high-performance foiling sailboat. Participants will learn the basics of foiling, boat handling, and speed control while enjoying the excitement of “flying” above the water. Open to sailors comfortable in the water and ready for an adrenaline-packed sailing experience.

Wetsuits are required
Wetsuit booties are required.

Taking the Wing Foil Classes before the Waszp camp is a good idea! But not required!

Comfort in the water is a must. Sailors will be active in and out of the water while learning to sail the Waszp.

Waszp Racing (RWZ) Camp

The Waszp Racing program is for sailors who have participated in a wasp camp before and want to move into racing the waszp. The program will consist of 2 practice weekends as well as 2 weekday practices leading up to the CA State Waszp Champs at PY. Participants will learn develop foiling, boat handling, and speed control while enjoying the excitement of “flying” above the water.

Wetsuits are required.
Wetsuit Boots are required.
