SPRING REGISTRATION OPENS DECEMBER 15
Spring registration will be open December 15 – January 15.
- There are 3 Entry Points to our program: Learn to Sail (8-11yo), Middle School Sailing (11-13yo), and High School Sailing (13-18yo).
- Boats are provided for all introductory-level classes (entry points) as well as Opti Green/Development. Boat ownership is needed for the Opti and 420 Race Teams after your first season.
- All sailors must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket and helmet.
- Safety boats are present for all sessions.
- Cancellation Policy: $50 service charge for cancellation before the first date of class. Those not removed from the wait list due to over-subscription will be refunded class fees.
- In the event of inclement weather that poses a safety risk, PYSF reserves the right to cancel or postpone classes.

Learn to Sail
Learn the fundamentals of sailing while developing the skills to progress through the proficiency levels of sailing. While no experience is necessary, sailors must be comfortable in the water while wearing a life jacket. Two sessions will be offered this spring. It is common for kids to repeat this class to find more comfort and confidence in their skills and being on the water, so the sailors will have the chance of taking the class twice before the summer if needed.

Ages 8-11
Cost: $1400
Saturdays and Sundays, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.
Consists of 8 classes
Session 1: February 28th to March 22nd
Session 2: April 18th to May 17th (no class April 25 & 26th)
*Some kids pick up the sport quickly, while others may repeat learn-to-sail multiple times before advancing to Learn 2.0. Your instructors will update you on the sailor’s progress towards the end of the course. This class does not compete in regattas.
Learn 2.0
Learn 2.0 is the next step on the Opti Path. You must have completed Learn to Sail AND received a coach’s approval before registering for this class. Sailors in 2.0 will be introduced to racing, but the focus on the class is developing sailing skills. Sailors in this class are expected to be able to rig and sail independently with some guidance. Instruction is focused on refining sailing technique and learning the basic racing rules.

Consists of 4 classes
Session 1: April 18th to May 3rd (no class April 25 & 26th)
Session 2: May 9th to May 17th
Learn 3.0 Camp
This is a required course to transition 2.0 sailors to Opti Development. Sailors must have completed Learn 2.0 AND have a coach’s approval before registering for this class. Sailors will be trained on rigging, capsizing, bailing, and sailing an Optimist in preparation for joining regular practice.

Opti Development Team
Opti Development is the final stage of the Opti Path. Sailors must complete Learn 3.0 before joining. At this level, athletes travel and compete in regattas throughout California and beyond while training in racing strategy, tactics, advanced boat handling, racing rules, and fitness. Sailors are expected to demonstrate both physical and mental athletic maturity—sailing is now a sport, and you are part of a team!
This program requires strong family commitment. Travel to regattas includes transporting Optis and motorboats, and families with tow-capable vehicles will be asked to help share towing responsibilities. (Time to get that hitch installed!)
Boats are provided when available, with priority given to new sailors. Those with the most seniority will be required to purchase their own boat.

Middle School Sailing
This class serves as an introduction to double-handed racing and sailing with a spinnaker. We ask that all sailors who enroll in this class have taken at least a beginner sailing class before. The FEVA is a two-person boat ideal for beginner racers. It is a durable boat that offers a great platform to learn how to fly a spinnaker and work with a teammate. The class will include racing in the winter BAYS series as well as participating in the BAYS Clinic at Richmond YC. This season, we are also adding foiling days to the class, so once a week, sailors will have the chance to try our foiling boards and learn how to fly a wing. This is an exciting new path to our sport, and we are excited to bring it to these young sailors to try.

– Closed-toed shoes – either old sneakers or sailing wetsuit boots

High School Sailing
This program welcomes both new and experienced sailors—no prior team experience required. Sailors will practice regularly, build their skills, and compete in regattas throughout the Bay Area and Southern California. This is a great way to improve boat handling, learn teamwork, and experience the excitement of high school racing. Comfort in the water is a must.

420 Development Team
Prerequisite: Middle School/ High School Sailing or Opti Development
Sailors on the 420 Development Team should be competent in double-handed sailing (as skipper and crew) or be experienced Opti racers. Training focuses on boat handling, sail trim, race-course strategy, and learning to tune the Club 420— including mast rake and rig tension. Practices are structured around upcoming regattas. No partner is required.
Most sailors will participate in both the 420 Development Team and High School Race Team to accelerate their progress. The 420 Development team will compete in regattas around the Bay Area and across California.

High Performance Race Team
Prerequisites: Must have sailed on the 420 Development Team before being invited onto the HP Team
HP Race Team sailors train in focused practice blocks leading up to regattas and will race in both C420s and high-performance i420s. Team members are expected to participate in local Bay Area regattas. Pairings for practices and events are assigned by the coaching staff and coordinated with the sailors.
Most sailors will be enrolled in BOTH the High Performance Race Team and High School Race Team to further enhance their skill set.

Adventure Sailing
Discover the fun of sailing with PYSF! Sailors will explore a variety of boats, including 15′ dinghies, 18′ keelboats, stand-up paddleboards, tow and wing foiling, and PYSF’s wooden classic yacht. Each day features a new adventure, teaching fundamentals of sailing, boat handling, water safety, and on-the-water STEM and environmental lessons. No prior experience is required, but sailors must be comfortable in the water while wearing a life jacket.

Waszp Foiling Clinic
Experience the thrill of foiling! This hands-on clinic introduces sailors to the Waszp, a high-performance foiling sailboat. Participants will learn the basics of foiling, boat handling, and speed control while enjoying the excitement of “flying” above the water. Open to sailors comfortable in the water and ready for an adrenaline-packed sailing experience.
Water Shoes are required.
No prior experience or existing team required! Comfort in the water is a must. Sailors will be active in and out of the water while learning to sail the Waszp.

Drop-In High School Wing Foiling
Discover the thrill of wing foiling—one of the fastest-growing watersports in the world. This class introduces sailors and water-sports enthusiasts to the fundamentals of riding a hydrofoil board while controlling a handheld wing. Students will learn how to harness the wind for power, build balance and board control, and experience the incredible sensation of lifting above the water on a foil.
If you are already enrolled in HS Sailing this season, sign up for one day to try it out, or multiple days to become proficient. Dates are available most Mondays and Tuesdays 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Wetsuits are highly recommended.
Water shoes are required.
No prior experience or existing team required! Comfort in the water is a must. Sailors will be active in and out of the water while learning to ride a foil-board.
