- There are 3 Entry Points to our program depending on your child’s age: Guppies (6-7yo), Learn to Sail (8-11yo), and Adventure Sailing (12-18yo).
- Boats are provided for all introductory-level classes (entry points). Boat ownership is needed for the Opti and 420 Race Teams after your first season.
- All sailors must wear a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket and helmet.
- Safety boats are present for all sessions.
- Cancellation Policy: $50 service charge for cancellation outside of 2 weeks prior to class. No refunds within 2 weeks of class start.
- In the event of inclement weather that poses a safety risk, PYSF reserves the right to cancel or postpone classes.

Guppies
Perfect for our youngest aspiring sailors, Guppies is a playful, confidence-building introduction to life on the water! Kids will explore sailing through hands-on time both on land and aboard a variety of boats—including our 8′ Cubes, 18′ keelboats, and coachboats. It’s all about discovery, comfort, and fun as they learn basic sailing concepts and enjoy being out on the water. No experience needed, but sailors must be comfortable in the water while wearing a life jacket.
What class does my child take next? Guppies 2.0 or Learn-to-Sail. Parents often sign up for multiple courses in one summer.

Adventure Sailing
Discover the fun of sailing with PYSF! Sailors will explore a variety of boats, including 15′ dinghies, 18′ keelboats, stand-up paddleboards. Each day features a new adventure, teaching fundamentals of sailing, boat handling, water safety, and on-the-water STEM and environmental lessons. No prior experience is required, but sailors must be comfortable in the water while wearing a life jacket.

Learn to Sail
Build a strong foundation in sailing through hands-on instruction both on and off the water. Sailors will learn essential skills, including boat handling, sail trim, points of sail, basic knot tying, and water safety, while progressing through established sailing proficiency levels. While no experience is necessary, sailors must be comfortable in the water while wearing a life jacket.
*Some kids pick up the sport quickly, while others may repeat learn-to-sail multiple times before advancing to Learn 2.0. Your instructors will update you on the sailor’s progress towards the end of the course. This class does not compete in regattas.

Learn to Sail 2.0
Learn 2.0 is the next step on the Opti Path. You must have completed Learn to Sail AND received a coach’s approval before registering for this class. Sailors in 2.0 will be introduced to racing, but the class’s focus is on developing sailing skills. Sailors in this class are expected to be able to rig and sail independently with some guidance. Instruction is focused on refining sailing technique and learning the basic racing rules.

Learn to Sail 3.0
This is a required course to transition Learn 2.0 sailors to Opti Development. Sailors must have completed Learn 2.0 AND have a coach’s approval before registering for this class. Sailors will be trained on rigging, capsizing, bailing, and sailing an Optimist in preparation for joining regular practice. This class is not pass/fail, and is only required once.

Opti Development Team
Opti Development is the final stage of the Opti Path. Sailors must complete Learn 3.0 before joining. At this level, athletes travel and compete in regattas throughout California and beyond while training in racing strategy, tactics, advanced boat handling, racing rules, and fitness. Sailors are expected to demonstrate both physical and mental athletic maturity—sailing is now a sport, and you are part of a team!
This program requires strong family commitment. Travel to regattas includes transporting Optis and motorboats, and families with tow-capable vehicles will be asked to help share towing responsibilities. (Time to get that hitch installed!)

Boats are provided (Optimist) when available, with priority given to new sailors. Those with the most seniority will be required to purchase their own boat.

Feva Development Team
Feva Development is a program that introduces sailors to double-handed spinnaker racing. This is not an introductory course; prior sailing knowledge is recommended. It is ideal for Middle School-age sailors transitioning from Opti’s but not yet ready for 420 Development or High School. Sailors will train in class-specific skills that can be applied to future high-performance programs. The FEVA is a very stable learning platform and is a growing class in the Bay Area. There will be more racing opportunities in the future. A wetsuit is HIGHLY recommended for this class, in addition to the normal waterproof gear. You will get wet.

Learn to Wing Foil
Discover the thrill of wing foiling—one of the fastest-growing watersports in the world. This class introduces sailors and water-sports enthusiasts to the fundamentals of riding a hydrofoil board while controlling a handheld wing. Students will learn how to harness the wind for power, build balance and board control, and experience the incredible sensation of lifting above the water on a foil.
Wetsuits are highly recommended.
Water shoes are required.
No prior experience or existing team required! Comfort in the water is a must. Sailors will be active in and out of the water while learning to ride a foil-board.
Wing-foil equipment is provided

Waszp Foiling
Experience the thrill of foiling! This hands-on clinic introduces sailors to the WASZP, a high-performance foiling sailboat. Participants will learn the basics of foiling, boat handling, and speed control while enjoying the excitement of “flying” above the water. Open to sailors comfortable in the water and ready for an adrenaline-packed sailing experience.
Wetsuits are highly recommended.
Water shoes are required.
Taking the Wing Foil Classes before the Waszp camp is a good idea! But not required!
Comfort in the water is a must. Sailors will be active in and out of the water while learning to sail the Waszp.

420 Development Team
Prerequisite: Middle School/ High School Sailing or Opti Development
Sailors on the 420 Development Team should be competent in double-handed sailing (as skipper and crew) or be experienced Opti racers. Training focuses on boat handling, sail trim, race-course strategy, and learning to tune the Club 420— including mast rake and rig tension. Practices are structured around upcoming regattas. No partner is required.
The 420 Development team will compete in regattas around the Bay Area and across California.

High Performance Race Team
Prerequisite: Must have sailed on the 420 Development Team before being invited onto the HP Team
HP Race Team sailors train in focused practice blocks leading up to regattas and will race in both C420s and high-performance i420s. Team members are expected to participate in local Bay Area regattas. Pairings for practices and events are assigned by the coaching staff and coordinated with the sailors.

High School Sailing Clinic
This clinic will serve as a refresher, and a way to refine double-handed sailing skills. This is mostly aimed at those looking to participate in High School sailing in the fall and spring, but all are welcome! Great for anyone looking to learn to skipper, or wanting to refine their crewing skills. This class will be open to rising eighth graders, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. We will be teaching intermediate boat handling and racing skills, as well as refining existing knowledge and techniques. If you are a new recruit to your High School Sailing Team, or are thinking of joining the High School Sailing Team in the fall, this clinic will set you up to start off the semester and racing season feeling confident.

This clinic will run Monday-Thursday. There will be no class on Friday.
